The first Heuer Skipper watch appeared in the late 1960s and was based on the Carrera chronograph. Designed for professional and amateur sailors, this unique chronograph was introduced in several versions before the final full production model was released in 1983.
40 years later, TAG Heuer introduces the Carrera Skipper, a new generation of the Skipper derived from the recently launched “glassbox” Carrera (you can read our review here
Here. ), a model is being launched as part of the core collection. The watch will also be the flagship of a series of nautical models, marking TAG Heuer’s return to the world of yachts and yachting.
New and old (right)
The new Carrera Skipper watch reinterprets the unique dial of the original watch designed by TAG Heuer to celebrate the victory of the 12-meter American yacht “Intrepid” in the 1967 America’s Cup.
The signature blue circular brushed main dial features contrasting subdials. In particular, the 30-minute subdial has been adapted to count down before the start of a 15-minute regatta, divided into three 15-minute sections. Each section has a different color, with Regatta Orange used to remind the crew that only five minutes are left, Lagoon Green representing the color of the boat’s rigging, and Intrepid Teal representing the color of the yacht’s deck.
Other features derived from this historic watch include prominent triangular markers set every five minutes around the outer curved flange, a bright orange central seconds hand and the inclusion of the “Skipper” name counter at the bottom of the 12-hour counter also in the signature Intrepid teal color.
The hour/minute hands and hour markers are treated with white Super-LumiNova, which glows green in the dark.
The dynamic lines of the 39 mm stainless steel case are accentuated by alternating polished and satin-brushed surfaces. The sapphire crystal extends around the edge of the dial to the case, extending across its entire diameter. Due to the shape of the glass, the total thickness of the watch is 13.9 mm, with the glass alone accounting for approximately 3 mm.
The crown does not screw down, but water resistance is still guaranteed up to a pressure of 10 bar (100 meters/330 feet).
The sapphire crystal case back reveals an upgraded version of TAG Heuer’s in-house automatic chronograph movement: the 4 Hz (28,800 vibrations per hour) Heuer 02.
The new generation movement, called TH20-00, is now equipped with a rotor that winds in both directions, whereas the previous version only charged the movement’s mainspring when the rotor moved in a counterclockwise direction. It has an 80-hour power reserve.
The new TAG Heuer Carrera Skipper ref. CBS2213.FN6002 is available on a blue fabric strap secured to the wrist by a stainless steel folding clasp with double safety push-buttons. The retail price is CHF 6,600.
